A Place to Belong
Inspired by her own family experience, Amy Attalla created Sibshops Fernie to give siblings of children with special needs a place to connect, share and simply be kids. Meet a 2025 Tidbits of Change Award recipient who turned a personal experience into something meaningful for her community.
Growing up alongside her younger sister with special needs gave Amy firsthand insight into the unique experiences of siblings in similar families. With guidance from her older sister, Joy, her mother’s background in special education and her father’s experience in camp leadership and business, Amy developed workshops where young people can connect with others who understand, share their experiences and simply enjoy being kids together.
“Every year, we hear from young Canadians doing incredible things alongside a parent or mentor. Amy’s story, and the bond she shares with her parents and sisters, truly stood out this year,” said Hali ScottSmith, co-founder of the Tidbits of Change Foundation.
Through Sibshops Fernie, Amy has created more than a support program. She has created a community where siblings can feel understood, build friendships and know they are not alone. It’s a powerful example of how one family’s experience can inspire positive change for many others.
The Tidbits of Change Foundation’s 2025 Tidbits of Change Award has been presented to Amy Attalla of Fernie, B.C., for creating Sibshops Fernie, a non-profit initiative providing peer support for siblings of children with special needs.
